The Ethereum Dencun upgrade has been successfully implemented, with a significant decrease in Layer 2 transaction costs. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his celebration and revealed the upcoming progress of ETH.
The highly anticipated Ethereum Dencun upgrade was successfully launched on the mainnet last night. The most important change introduced is the introduction of a new transaction type called “Blobs,” which brings higher transaction efficiency and lower transaction costs to the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution.
Currently, major L2 networks are gradually integrating Blobs (Optimism, Starknet, and zkSync have already been updated, while Arbitrum One and Base will be completed later today), and projects that have completed integration have indeed seen a significant decrease in gas fees.
Comparison of L2 gas fees before and after the upgrade:
According to the L2 Fees website, the following figures were captured and compared: gas fees at 6 pm on the 13th (before the Dencun upgrade) and gas fees in the early morning of the 14th. The results are as follows:
– zkSync Era: Sending ETH decreased from $0.15 to $0.04.
– StarkNet: Sending ETH decreased from $0.71 to $0.07.
– OP Mainnet: Sending ETH decreased from $0.36 to less than $0.01.
OP officials also stated on Twitter:
“Gas fees on OP Mainnet after the Dencun upgrade are now significantly lower.”
Vitalik pointed out the next steps:
As for the next steps for Ethereum after the Dencun upgrade, Vitalik Buterin posted on the decentralized social platform Farcaster, stating:
“The Ethereum development roadmap is divided into six parts: The Merge, The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge, all of which operate simultaneously.”
The introduction of Blobs in the Dencun upgrade, which is governed by EIP-4844, belongs to The Surge part of the roadmap. Regarding the successful implementation of this update, Vitalik mentioned that the foundational milestone for scalability has been achieved.
The upcoming progress mentioned by Vitalik, namely Wölk trees (verkle trees) and history expiry, belongs to the goals of The Verge and The Purge parts of the roadmap, respectively.
