Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin published a long article today, expressing his vision for the future of Ethereum. He emphasizes the importance of returning to the original values of decentralization, open participation, resistance to censorship, and trust neutrality, while also taking a dig at Justin Sun, calling him the “coolest and most decentralized”.
With 2023 coming to an end, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, seems to be particularly reflective and has been posting regularly in the community. Today, on the 29th, Vitalik Buterin once again published a lengthy article stating that Ethereum needs to reignite its early “cypherpunk” ideals and “Make Ethereum cypherpunk again!”.
In order to achieve Ethereum’s initial vision, Vitalik Buterin mentions several specific ideas and strategies in his article. He points out that Ethereum was originally envisioned as a “public decentralized shared hard disk” that could utilize peer-to-peer communication and decentralized file storage. However, this vision has faded since Ethereum’s shift towards financialization in 2017.
Vitalik Buterin believes that the future of Ethereum should return to the values of decentralization, open participation, resistance to censorship, and trust neutrality. He hopes for the flourishing development of non-financial applications on the blockchain and emphasizes the potential of technologies such as Rollups, zero-knowledge proofs, account abstraction, and Layer2 privacy solutions in realizing these values.
At the same time, he also emphasizes that there may be teams building projects in the crypto ecosystem that do not adhere to these values, such as creating highly centralized networks or storing NFTs on centralized websites instead of decentralized file storage platforms like IPFS.
It is worth mentioning that in the article, Vitalik Buterin points out that in many countries, people do indeed use cryptocurrencies for remittances and savings, but this is often done in a centralized manner, including internal transfers through centralized exchange accounts or trading USDT on the Tron network. This practice contradicts the original intention of decentralized cryptocurrencies. Ironically, he posts a photo with Tron founder Justin Sun, with the caption:

In reality, Vitalik Buterin also questioned Justin Sun in the community earlier this December. The situation was as follows: CoinDesk, a blockchain media outlet, organized a sponsored interview program by Tron on the 6th, inviting Justin Sun to discuss “responsibility and best practices”. Vitalik Buterin responded in the comments of the tweet, saying, “Are you sure you want to do this with Justin Sun?”. Vitalik Buterin believes that the industry should learn from the SBF incident and be more cautious, avoiding assisting wealthy individuals in purchasing legitimacy through wealth. He implies that giving prominent figures a platform in such activities may encourage such practices.
