The Ethereum Kankun upgrade “Dencun” was officially activated at 21:55 Taiwan time on the 13th, but there seemed to be some minor delays at launch. ETH did not skyrocket as expected by the market and briefly dropped to $3,930 at the time of writing.
22:13 Update: The upgrade has now been confirmed as completed, and the downward trend of ETH has eased, rising again to nearly $4,000.
What is the most important proposal of the Kankun upgrade, EIP-4844?
Ethereum EIP-4844 is the core content of the Kankun upgrade, symbolizing a major step towards scalability in the right direction. It introduces a new transaction type called “blob,” which serves as a method for Rollup to release transaction data. Compared to the current calldata storage of immutable transaction data and read-only memory, blob has much larger storage capacity and is cheaper, laying the foundation for future scalability.
However, it should be noted that Blob is primarily used to reduce the data storage cost of L2 (data storage costs previously accounted for over 90% of L2 transaction gas fees), thereby reducing the gas fees of Ethereum L2. Its impact on gas fees of the Ethereum mainnet is relatively much smaller.
