Google has recently added a Bitcoin wallet address search function, allowing users to directly check the balance and last updated time of Bitcoin addresses on the search engine. This feature now supports multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon, and Fantom.
Users can now input Bitcoin addresses directly into the Google search bar, supporting three address formats: P2PKH starting with “1”, P2SH starting with “3”, and Bech32 starting with “bc1” as a result of Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP173, supporting SegWit technology. When searching for any of these Bitcoin addresses, users will see the balance up to the last transaction as well as the last updated time.
Considering Google’s vast global user base, this move is significant for the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin. While Google is taking steps towards mainstream adoption, privacy-focused Bitcoin advocates have expressed concerns. Despite this, many Bitcoin supporters appreciate Google’s gradual integration, which may lead to more comprehensive search features in the future.
This integration comes after years of fluctuating relationships between Google and Bitcoin. Google’s attitude towards cryptocurrency has evolved from a complete ban on cryptocurrency-related advertising in 2018 to gradually allowing ads for cryptocurrency exchanges, wallet services, NFT games, and finally opening up advertising for “cryptocurrency trusts” in the US from January 29th, including Bitcoin spot ETF products. The support for searching Bitcoin wallet balances marks Google’s increasingly open stance towards the cryptocurrency industry.
