LayerZero Interoperability Protocol officially opened its airdrop application on June 20, 2024, at 19:00 Taiwan time, introducing a new mechanism that requires users to pay 0.1 USD worth of USDC, USDT, or ETH for each ZRO airdrop they want to claim. This decision has sparked significant discontent among the community.

Background:
What is LayerZero? Operating principles of the full-chain protocol, popular projects in the ecosystem, ZRO token economics…all summarized here.

Table of Contents:
How to claim the LayerZero airdrop?
Donations are required to claim the airdrop.
Community outrage: Accusing it of being a scam.
ZRO falls below 3.5 USD.

The LayerZero Interoperability Protocol has become one of the most anticipated airdrop projects of the year, with a valuation exceeding 3 billion USD. The official airdrop eligibility inquiry was opened on the 19th, and the airdrop application was officially launched at 19:00 on June 20, in Taiwan time.

How to claim the LayerZero airdrop?
According to the official announcement, users can visit the LayerZero Airdrop Claim website to claim their airdrop. The specific details include:
– Please ensure the URL is correct to avoid falling victim to scams.
– Eligible users can claim their airdrop through Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Avalanche.
– The claiming period is from June 20 to September 20. If there are unclaimed airdrops, these tokens will be redistributed to LayerZero core users.

Donations are required to claim the airdrop.
However, it is worth noting that in this airdrop application, LayerZero has introduced a new mechanism called “Proof-of-Donation.” This means that if users want to claim their ZRO airdrop, they need to pay 0.1 USD worth of USDC, USDT, or ETH for each ZRO token. (In other words, if you want to claim 100 ZRO, you need to pay 10 USD.)

LayerZero explained that the donations collected during this airdrop will be fully contributed to the on-chain funding project called Protocol Guild, which is crucial for the development of LayerZero as it supports Ethereum developers. Since the total airdrop amount is 85 million ZRO, LayerZero will raise 8.5 million USD. Additionally, LayerZero has pledged to donate an additional 10 million USD to Protocol Guild, bringing the total donation to 18.5 million USD.

Community outrage: Accusing it of being a scam.
However, since the airdrop inquiry on June 19, the community has been disappointed by the lower-than-expected number of airdrops, expressing their anger by saying, “Are they just dismissing beggars? Are they witches?” and “After following the project for over a year, this is the result. Honestly, I feel very disappointed.”

Today, LayerZero’s measure of requiring donations to claim the airdrop has once again sparked discontent among the community. User @Airdrop_Guard directly criticized LayerZero’s CEO as a “scammer,” while user @d_lennertz stated, “This is not a donation, this is theft, this is garbage.”

In fact, the author also finds the actions of the LayerZero team in this instance perplexing. Although their intention is to donate, designing it as voluntary donations or offering NFTs as a reward for donations would likely have garnered more positive responses from users. After all, they just angered the community yesterday, and this move undoubtedly exacerbates the situation.

ZRO falls below 3.5 USD.
On the other hand, at 20:00 on June 20, Taiwan time, LayerZero’s native token, ZRO, was listed on exchanges such as OKX, Bitget, and Binance. After opening, ZRO briefly reached a high of 4.89 USD. However, it has since dropped continuously and is currently trading at 3.423 USD, representing a nearly 30% decline from yesterday’s high.
