Vitalik pointed out today that the biggest user experience problem for Ethereum’s L2 is that it does not yet feel like a unified Ethereum. He suggested that before developing advanced features, the focus should be on ensuring the implementation of basic functionality. Additionally, he predicted that future L2 solutions will be ZK rollups and once again expressed great admiration for ENS, considering it one of Ethereum’s most successful non-financial applications.

(Background:
Vitalik’s latest article: ETH does not need to be the fastest L1, but should continue to improve Ethereum’s security and decentralization features.)

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin had an in-depth discussion with several ecosystem participants today to explore ways to improve the technical implementation and future direction of Ethereum’s L2. In response to Soul Wallet founder Alex Tsankov’s perspective on the need for shared ordering rather than intent, Vitalik commented:

Vitalik also emphasized that the current biggest user experience problem we face is that the L2 world does not feel “like a unified Ethereum” yet. Although there has been significant improvement compared to a year ago, it is still far from the ideal state.

Vitalik suggested that before diving into the development of any high-end features, it is important to ensure the implementation of basic functionality. He pointed out:

Similarly, Vitalik further stated that this thinking applies to security and decentralization as well. Which functionalities have been achieved or are close to being achieved on L1 but are still far behind on L2s? He provided the following examples:

Light clients: If there are light clients on L1, they can verify the state of L2.

Basic reliability: The network should not stop running or exhibit strange rollback phenomena. Ethereum has only had one major issue in its 9-year history.

Proof systems: For example, we need more phase-one rollups.

In summary, Vitalik believes that it is important to prioritize solving basic problems, establishing standards and infrastructure across L2, and improving the overall user experience and security to make the L2 ecosystem more like a unified Ethereum.

Vitalik: ENS is Ethereum’s most successful non-financial application

Furthermore, in response to researcher Chen Jian’s slightly teasing comment, “ENS is really Vitalik’s baby, he takes it wherever he goes.” Vitalik replied:

Upon the release of this comment, ENS surged from $17.87 to a short-term high of $21.33, and was trading at around $20.4 at the time of writing, with a 40% increase in the past 24 hours.

Vitalik indeed holds ENS in high regard. In January, he tweeted that ENS is “super important” and emphasized that ENS should maintain accessibility and universality for all users of the Ethereum network, especially on Ethereum L2. Vitalik believes that all L2s should operate on trustless, Merkle-proof-based CCIP resolvers, allowing ENS subdomains to be registered, updated, and read directly on L2 networks. This motivation led to a 70% surge in ENS.

Vitalik predicts that ZK rollups will become mainstream

Additionally, during the discussion, Tezos engineer @ArthurB stated that under Optimistic Rollups, shared ordering is not an unrealistic tool; in fact, it is more like a beautified custodial bridge.

In response, Vitalik expressed his vision for the future of L2:
