South Korean newspaper Economic Daily reports that Meta will launch an innovative Quest Pro virtual reality (VR) device in the first half of next year, and it is rumored that this product development is being done in collaboration with LG Group from South Korea. In order to deepen this cooperation, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, is expected to visit South Korea for the first time on Wednesday, February 28th, where he will have in-depth discussions with the CEO of LG.
Meta has previously collaborated with many major companies in VR hardware development. The previous Gear VR was supported by Samsung, Oculus Go was manufactured by Xiaomi, and Oculus Rift S was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Lenovo. Each product incorporates the brand characteristics and technical strength of its partners. The collaboration with LG this time has raised expectations about how the LG brand and product naming will be integrated, although it is currently unclear whether Quest Pro 2 will be its final name.
In addition to Meta and LG, other tech giants are also actively exploring the XR field. Last year, Samsung announced a collaboration with Google to develop head-mounted displays, with Google leading the software development. These collaborations demonstrate the high level of attention and investment in XR devices in the tech industry.
One major highlight of the new headsets is the integration of LG’s webOS operating system, which could mean that the headsets will have built-in virtual LG TVs and support multiple streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, thus significantly improving the current limitations of media playback on Quest.
The Codec Avatars feature being developed by Meta, which achieves realistic human-like avatars through facial tracking sensors in the headsets, is expected to change the way remote communication is conducted. This has a similar goal to Apple’s Personas feature, although Personas is still in its early stages.
With the renewed collaboration between Meta and LG, as well as the addition of Google and Samsung, the high-end VR headset market is expected to be a competition among Apple, Meta/LG, and Google/Samsung next year.
