Notcoin Co-Founder Questions Future of Tap-to-Earn Game Models at Token2049 in Dubai
Recently, Notcoin co-founder expressed at the Token2049 event held in Dubai that the tap-to-earn game model may have reached its end. Currently, Telegram does not have a “real game,” but considering Telegram’s existing user base and ecosystem, there is still potential for exponential growth in Telegram games in the future.

Last year, the tap-to-earn game Notcoin on the instant messaging giant Telegram sparked a gaming craze, attracting over 30 million users in a short time through viral distribution. Its token, NOT, once surged to a market value of billions of dollars, becoming a landmark project for Web3 gaming in 2024.
However, as the market excitement wanes, the founders of Notcoin have raised questions about the future of this model.
Notcoin Co-Founder: Tap-to-Earn Game Model is Dead
According to a report by Cointelegraph yesterday, Notcoin co-founder Vladimir Plotvinov stated at the Token2049 event in Dubai that the tap-to-earn game model may have reached its end. He explicitly pointed out:
We will see different types of games because tap-to-earn games may be dead; they are not sustainable.
Meanwhile, Notcoin co-founder Sasha added that while Telegram games are expected to show explosive growth in 2024, player behavior indicates a clear phenomenon of “game hopping,” where users immediately switch to other games after “mining” resources in one project.
Sasha commented on this, stating: “Users coming to mine resources are motivated just to earn something. However, what is more important for gaming is that I find it fun, I want to play with my friends, I want to play in a community.” He acknowledged that Telegram currently does not have a “real game.”
However, it is worth noting that during this discussion, Uliana Salo, head of design and product at NotGames, analyzed from the perspective of market potential, stating that Telegram’s market environment is similar to that of Facebook and WeChat, both of which have mature gaming ecosystems.
We believe in the opportunity we have because we already have a platform similar to WeChat and Facebook, which already have their own gaming ecosystems; this is a huge market. The user numbers are nearly the same.
Thus, despite Telegram’s gaming environment currently lacking major publishers and investor funding, she anticipates that Telegram games will still achieve exponential growth in the future. She further added that her team is committed to encouraging player engagement due to the enjoyment of the game itself, rather than solely for token rewards:
We try to add extra elements, like fun, so that people play not just for money but for themselves.
AI-Assisted Game Development
Additionally, in terms of game development, Vladimir Plotvinov also mentioned that the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and Telegram made game development more efficient. He stated: “It saves time. My delivery speed has become faster. I am coding faster than ever because I save a lot of time on other simple tasks.”
However, he also warned developers to be cautious when using AI, emphasizing the importance of expertise: “You have to be very careful and possess expertise and experience because you need to understand how APIs work, how they connect to each other, and how they operate under high load and large numbers of users.”
