Marques Brownlee, a renowned tech reviewer with 18 million subscribers on YouTube, recently expressed in one of his videos that the Saga phone, launched by the public blockchain Solana, is the “worst phone of the year” in his opinion.
Background:
Solana’s Saga phone has been hyped to be more expensive than the iPhone 15! Multicoin predicts that there will be more Solana airdrops within a year.
Solana introduced its first blockchain phone, Saga, in April of this year. Initially priced at $1,000, the phone faced issues such as high price and security vulnerabilities, resulting in poor sales. In August, Solana had no choice but to announce a 40% price reduction to $599, but the market demand remained low.
However, there was a big turnaround soon after! Due to generous airdrops by the Solana ecosystem to Saga phone owners, the value of the additional airdropped tokens exceeded the phone’s price ($599). This turned Saga into an “investment commodity,” and its sales increased more than tenfold. Users even exclaimed that they “made a profit from their purchase.”
Tech guru Marques Brownlee criticizes Saga as the “worst phone of the year.”
Despite the skyrocketing sales of Saga, it cannot change the flaws in its phone design. In a recent video titled “Annual Phone Review” on his YouTube channel, Marques Brownlee, who has 18 million subscribers and has been hailed as the “best tech reviewer on Earth” by former Google Vice President of Engineering, expressed that even though Saga regained popularity through its joint marketing with the Solana ecosystem and the meme coin Bonk, it is still the “worst phone of the year” in his opinion.
However, Solana Saga’s official response on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) suggests that they are not particularly concerned about this blogger’s negative review of their phone. They replied to Marques Brownlee, stating:
“Saga, as an investment product, is indeed not as good as flagship phones like Apple, Samsung, Google, etc., from a purely technological perspective. However, what attracts people in the crypto community is the hope of gaining huge profits from it. Currently, Saga phone’s additional income, including airdrops, can be divided into three parts:
1. Airdrop Income: In addition to Bonk, owning Saga allows users to receive airdrops from multiple projects and exclusive NFT minting qualifications, including Call of Saga, Access Protocol (ACS), Samoyedcoin (SAMO), and Solend (SLND).
2. Mining Income: Saga phone holders can mine on the decentralized wireless communication network Helium Mobile (MOBILE) and decentralized storage network ShdwDrive (SHDW). MOBILE has already become a hot topic within the community due to its several-fold increase in value over the past month.
3. Resale: It is known that Solana officially announced last weekend that Saga is sold out in North America, and only a small amount of inventory remains in Europe. It can even be found on e-commerce platforms like eBay that the resale price of Saga in the second-hand market has exceeded $2,000.”
