Getting rich has always been a familiar yet unfamiliar term in the cryptocurrency industry. It’s unfamiliar because many friends who have been in the industry for years have been aiming for it but have yet to achieve even half of it. It’s familiar because in every wave of cryptocurrency narratives, there are continuous “get rich stories” that appear in our field of view, repeatedly stimulating everyone’s nerves.
Now, as we approach the end of 2023, this article specifically selects those widely circulated “enviable” get rich stories of the year (assuming there are pictures as evidence), allowing us to feel the anxiety to the fullest.
Since the launch of UNI in 2020, token airdrops have always been the main gathering place for the “get rich myth” in the cryptocurrency industry. This year’s large-scale token airdrops have also brought surprises to many users, especially with the BLUR and ARB airdrops igniting a frenzy at the beginning of the year.
In February of this year, Blur conducted a total airdrop of 360 million BLUR tokens to over 62,000 addresses that met the airdrop conditions. The single address that received the most tokens received 3.2 million BLUR tokens, which is worth about 1.6 million US dollars at today’s market price, equivalent to 10 million RMB.
At the same time, the second and third place in the airdrop rankings received 2.97 million BLUR tokens and 2.5 million BLUR tokens respectively. Trading activities show that the top three wallet addresses involved in the transactions had repeated buying and selling of a large number of the same NFTs, indicating the possibility of wash trading or pre-arranged operations.
Subsequent airdrops of ARB, TIA, and JTO also have stories of individuals getting rich through multiple addresses participating in the airdrop, but we won’t go into detail about them here.
As one of the leaders in the Minting track, ORDI initially gained little attention in the first half of the year. Even in WeChat groups, no one was interested in buying even when they were priced at just a few dozen RMB.
However, there was a lucky person who spent 350 RMB to buy 30 ORDI tokens (equivalent to 30,000 ORDI tokens) by working at a factory. In the end, he successfully turned it into 14 million RMB.
If this lucky person had not sold, the 30,000 ORDI tokens would have been worth a maximum of 2.46 million US dollars, nearly 17.5 million RMB.
According to a tweet shared by a user, the SATS he bought for 0.6 BTC in October increased more than 20 times in value in 2 months, reaching 13 BTC.
In addition, community members bought 300 billion SATS tokens from August to September, with the highest gain reaching over 170 times.
Similarly, in the Minting track, RATS also created a myth of going from 5,000 RMB to 1 million RMB in just half a month.
Furthermore, the Web3 world is a paradise for technical talents and hackers. So, in addition to directly participating in Minting projects, those who sell shovels and water are often winners in the gold rush:
A programmer spent a week developing a tool to help the community with Minting and received 20% of the SATS. The corresponding market value of these SATS tokens now exceeds 200 million US dollars.
As the oldest narrative in the cryptocurrency industry, PoW almost produces a rise myth for a PoW coin every year. This year, the title of the new generation PoW coin god undoubtedly belongs to Kaspa (KAS).
In August, a university student, through frugal living, went all-in on KAS and achieved his first 100x gain story, which spread throughout the internet.
This student, who is still in university, “put all his living expenses and Chinese New Year money of 19,800 RMB” into KAS. He even “ate meals with his classmates” at one point. In the end, he successfully made a profit of 200 times and 2 million RMB.
Currently, if this student continues to hold, it is likely that he has already gained his first 250x and 5 million RMB. In August, KAS was trading around $0.04 per token. Later, it continued to rise, and on November 17th, it was listed on Binance with a stable price above $0.1. Based on this calculation, the student’s 19,800 RMB has increased by at least 250 times, reaching 5 million RMB.
Looking back, the price increase of KAS can be traced back to the end of May 2022 when it was listed on TxBit. At that time, the lowest price of KAS was $0.0002. In September of the same year, KAS was listed on MEXC, and the price quickly soared to $0.008.
Since then, KAS has skyrocketed 20 times this year, from $0.005 to over $0.1, with a market value approaching $1 billion. This has led to a frenzy in PoW coins and even small coin exchanges, making it a well-deserved new generation cryptocurrency god.
Compared to the “patience pays off” narratives of airdrops, Minting, and PoW, the recent meme frenzy has created many stories of rapid wealth accumulation through memes with gains of hundreds of times.
To get rich quickly, you have to rely on memes.
The token COQ of Coq Inu is one of the best examples, creating two myths of nearly 5,000 times gains.
First, on December 19th, a trader turned $454 into $2.19 million within two weeks, achieving a 4,827x gain:
The trader spent 17.26 AVAX tokens (equivalent to $454 at the time) to purchase 4.86 trillion COQ tokens through 7 addresses. Then, they sold 4.61 trillion COQ tokens for 32,251 AVAX (about $1.26 million) and 259 million USDC, still holding 250 billion COQ tokens (about $700,000), with a profit of approximately $2.19 million.
In addition, another address made a 4,397x gain by trading COQ, turning $108 into $475,000 within 10 days:
On December 7th, the address spent 4.1126 AVAX (about $108) to buy 694.2 billion COQ tokens. They later sold COQ in multiple transactions, and now they have sold all of it, making a profit of $475,000, a gain of approximately 4,397 times.
As one of the meme protagonists scheduled for the Year of the Dragon, Silly also created a myth of gaining 25,000 times in just 20 days.
On December 5th, an address purchased 20.5 million SILLY tokens (2% of the total supply) for 0.7 SOL (equivalent to $80). As of now, they have sold 20 million SILLY tokens, which is worth about $1.5 million (including selling 10 million tokens for $500,000). The address still holds 300,000 SILLY tokens (about $30,000), resulting in a return of approximately 25,000 times in 20 days.
If we consider the token airdrops of UNI and 1INCH in 2020 as rewards for industry participants with a keen sense of smell and a willingness to try new things, then this year, with the initial high valuations of top projects and the increasing “hype” of airdrop hunters, the probability of “low cost, high return” in the entire race is decreasing.
Minting and memes, in contrast to many previous large-scale fundraising projects and VC-led traditional narrative logic, undoubtedly provide more opportunities for participation from the wider public, beyond OGs and whales.
It is because of this that the Minting craze and meme wave have attracted more widespread funding and user participation, thus presenting us with one “get rich myth” after another this year.
From a probabilistic perspective, the flow of “get rich stories” between different narratives is precisely the change in the probabilities that run on different tracks. The logic of the cryptocurrency market has always been elusive, and the value discovery of all concept sectors or specific tokens has its inherent development logic.
I hope that you, who are reading this article, and I can seize the next wave of quietly accumulating sectors and become the protagonists of the next round of “get rich stories” next year.
